Travel Grants
for Master Students at Danish Higher Education Institutions
in support of thesis work relevant to Danish Development Assistance
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hereby invites applications for travel grants in support of thesis field work of master students enrolled at a Danish higher education institution (including OSVAL II studies for medical students). The applications will be evaluated by the research networks: Danish Development Research Network, Danish Research Network for International Health and Danish Water Forum (see list of network contacts below).
The size of the grant will be between DKK 10,000 and DKK 15,000.
Closing Date for Application
The closing date for second round of applications in 2010 is Monday, November 1 at 12:00 noon. Replies should be expected about six weeks after the closing date.
Conditions of Application
The applicant must be enrolled at a Danish higher education institution and the application must contain the following:
1. Completed application form (Form F)
2. Project description in English of maximum two A4 pages containing separate sections describing:
- problem-statement and aim of project
- methods
- relevance of project to Danish development assistance
- schedule for project and field work
3. Written approval of the project from the supervisor, guaranteeing the academic level of the project.
4. As documentation of local attachment, a signed official approval from the person in charge of the local development project or collaborating institution in the country where the field work is to be carried out.
5. Copies of relevant examination certificates
The application must be submitted before the field work begins, and field work must not have been concluded before the closing date for application. Minimum duration of field studies is 1 month.
Applications, which do not include all the above mentioned documents and information, will not be considered. Required documents cannot be forwarded after the closing date.
Submission of Applications
The applications marked "Travel Grant Application" must be submitted by electronic submittal, not later than the stated deadline, to: research@dfcentre.dk
The application form (Form F) should be submitted as machine readable Word file as well as signed PDF file (applicant signature on page 2 of the form). All other documents should be submitted as PDF files.
All applicants will receive a receipt notice shortly after the deadline.
Please note that applications that do not meet the stated deadline or otherwise fail to comply with the conditions set in this Call will be rejected.
Selection Criteria
The application will be assessed by the research networks in terms of the criteria listed below:
- The project’s relevance to Danish supported bilateral development assistance
- The field study takes place in a developing country
- The field study is of a duration that allows for gathering material of a sufficient scope and depth (minimum duration is 1 month).
Funding
The grant may cover some or all of the following expenses:
- Cheapest travel by air
- Visa, vaccination, research permit and travel insurance expenses
- Interpreting assistance
- Local transport (only individual invoices of more than DKK 200 each)
- Lodging expenses
All the expenses shall be documented by receipts. It is a precondition that the same expenses are not funded by other sources.
Reporting
The recipients of grants of the call 2010 are expected to forward the following documentation to DFC no later than two weeks after returning to Denmark:
- Financial accounting form including original receipts for all expenses
- Field study report of max. 2 pages in English as hard copy and in electronic file (Word or PDF file)
The report must contain a statement on the collaboration with the local partner, applicability of the collected data for the project/master thesis, as well as positive and negative experiences including possible changes in relation to the original project description.
A copy of the field study report must be sent to the local project or collaborating institution.
Should the financial account and report not be approved, a return of the funds may be requested.
After the thesis has been handed in, an abstract, in English, of maximum 500 words must be sent electronically (Word or PDF file) to the relevant research network.
