Role of Media in the Democratic Process (Médias et démocratie)
Target Group
Senior reporters and editors of print or electronic media with an interest in political reporting and debate. A balanced participation of men and women is prioritised the reason why female journalists are particularly encouraged to apply.
Entry Profile
Participants should meet the following requirements:
§ A good working knowledge of English (i.e. understand, speak, and write English at a professional level)
§ Documented practical journalistic working experience
§ Basic knowledge of computer technology at user level (Word, Outlook, Windows)
Topics
§ The relationship between the media and the public and private organisations and institutions in a democratic society:
- Where can media and authorities work hand in hand – and where are they opponents?
- Where are the legal, moral and ethical limits?
- When is criticism constructive and necessary, and when is it destructive?
§ Journalistic skills and ethics:
- Investigative journalism and interview techniques
- Scriptwriting
- Editing techniques
§ Introduction to digital opportunities:
- Bloggers and websites,
- Web radio and TV,
- Desk top publishing and digital photo processing
§ Media and conflict
- Understanding the role of media in conflict situations
- The role of media in conflict prevention and peacebuilding
- Conflict sensitive reporting
Course Goals
Participants will have increased their knowledge and understanding of the opportunities and responsibilities of the media in a democratic society.

Course Structure
The course comprises 4 modules and is a mixture of field trips to media organisations and democratic institutions and theoretical and practical class room training.

Funding
The Course is co-funded by Danida Fellowship Programme. After selection of course participants, the Danida programmes/projects are charged a non-refundable amount of DKK 2,500 per participant per tutorial week.
Total funding needs are DKK 10,000 per participant. This includes study fees, accommodation, allowances, insurances and international transport.
