Natural Resources Management

"The degradation of our natural resources is a significant barrier to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty, hunger, and disease. In a broader context human activities have eroded our natural resources so as to bring the planet to the edge of a massive wave of species extinctions, threatening our own well-being" (UN-led Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005).

This global context has made Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Development the cornerstone for humanity’s survival. As the basis for human development, it is both a technical and political issue.

Target Group
The course is intended for professionals who work with natural resources management in a development context. Diversity will be sought in terms of gender balance, countries, sectors, and institutions. Participants will be engaged in the learning process and will also be selected on the basis of their potential for constructively using the acquired knowledge in their jobs.

Participants may be from government institutions, or members/staff of NGOs or private companies – all involved in Danida supported development cooperation activities. A good working knowledge of English is required.

Course Goals
The development objective of the course is that Natural Resources Management for Sustainable Development be integrated into core institutional thinking, policies and decision-making.

The immediate objective of the course is that individuals and institutions involved in natural resources management integrate sustainable development principles in all phases of the programming or project cycles (planning, implementation and review).

Content
The course will selectively target Best Practices so that useful tools and skills can be internalised by participants through participatory learning processes. Lectures will be supplemented by field trips and group work. Participants will engage in case-based learning and develop individual projects for implementation in their jobs.

The root causes of problems associated with Natural Resources Management, globally and in participants’ own countries will be analysed, with particular concern for understanding how Natural Resources Management relates to poverty. Participants will actively explore how to bring about constructive change through their jobs, and assist each other in this process.

Participants will learn to:

·          Critically analyse natural resources management issues using sustainable development criteria

·          Apply tools and approaches for NRM for sustainable development

·          Promote NRM for sustainable development through their jobs

Funding
The course is co-funded by the Danida Fellowship Programme. Programmes/projects will be charged DKK 2,500 per participant per study week, hence DKK 10,000 per participant for the entire course. This will cover all expenses, namely study fees, air-ticket, accommodation, personal allowances, insurances, etc.
