Addressing Climate Change in Development Assistance

It is generally agreed that we will experience considerable and increasing human-caused climate changes in the years to come and that the impact will affect all countries through more extreme weather conditions, such as longer periods of drought, floods, or storms.  As many people in developing countries are highly dependent on natural resources, they are highly vulnerable to the effects of climatic changes.

There is a need for local and global action. The Kyoto Protocol emphasises two parallel tracks: adaptation and mitigation. Adaptation because some effects of the climate changes can no longer be avoided and solutions such as new agricultural techniques and adequate infrastructure need to be identified. Mitigation because we need to decrease emission of green house gases to reduce the magnitude of the changes.

This course highlights the background of climate changes, global and local effects, and looks to the future. The course will introduce common and individual opportunities and responsibilities and present tools for adaptation and mitigation actions in development cooperation and at organisational and individual level.

Target Group

The participants will come from different organisations and can be policy- and decision makers or civil servants in ministries. Or they may work for NGOs or private companies or directly in a Danida funded programme/ project. They do not necessarily work directly with climate change issues at the moment since the aim is to create awareness and knowledge of current changes in climate among practitioners working in sectors affected by these changes and to present practical tools and ideas for action.
